The University of Virginia invites you to join more than 4,000 volunteers who mentor students, host events, serve on boards, advocate, and give back to our UVA community. Volunteers strive to inspire students to lead lives of service by setting a positive example. Some choose to give back because they were once students there and remember how the University changed their lives. Others are parents or family members of students, and some simply believe in the importance of public higher education. Whatever the reason, choosing to give back strengthens our community.
The menu below is just a sample of the various opportunities available at UVA. If you don’t see a volunteer opportunity that meets your interest or skill set, or you have trouble determining the appropriate person or area to contact for your volunteer interest, please let us know:
Alumni Association
Alumni Interest Groups (AIGs) are self-governed communities of UVA alumni bound by a shared UVA affinity or identity and supported by the UVA Alumni Association. AIGs include alumni of UVA sports teams, Greek organizations, student organizations and clubs, and more.
Made up of alumni from across generations, the Black Alumni Weekend (BAW) committee is integral to the success of BAW. Committee members represent the interests of the community, help shape the schedule of events, and build excitement.
Reunions are a terrific opportunity to reconnect with classmates and support the University. Join the Outreach Committee, the Giving Committee, or both! A minimal time commitment is required.
Review Committees evaluate scholarship applications in three cycles: fall (November), spring (March and April), and summer (June and July). Committee members are not obligated to participate in all three cycles.
In 1995, in response to the urging of energetic young graduates, the UVA Alumni Association established Young Alumni Council (YAC) to advocate for the needs of UVA young alumni. YAC works in partnership with the UVA Alumni Association to engage and support UVA’s young alumni.
School of Architecture
Practice2Practice virtual roundtables
The UVA School of Architecture Dean’s Advisory Board Practice2Practice (P2P) Roundtable convenes leaders from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban and environmental planning, architectural history, and beyond to connect with the A-School community. This program offers an opportunity to share best practices, lessons learned, and new ideas that aim to shape the future of our professions. Previous P2P roundtable discussions have centered on topics such as starting a firm, back-to-office plans, mission-driven projects, practicing and teaching, and transitioning firm leadership and retirement options.
If you have a P2P topic you would like to discuss with our community, please email Kim Wong Haggart with your ideas. All A-School alumni and friends are invited to our virtual roundtables, which take place one to two times each semester.
A-School Alumni Mentorship Program
The A-School Alumni Mentorship Program aims to open opportunities and build a trusted community for our students, first and foremost. Our A-School alumni community is a valuable resource of experience, advice and support. Many conversations may focus on career development and professional guidance but the program aims to foster relationships that can grow beyond reviewing portfolios and resumes.
A-School Alumni Office Hours (virtual)
The UVA School of Architecture, together with the A-School Young Alumni Council and Dean’s Advisory Board, hosts two Alumni Office Hours each spring and fall semester. Alumni volunteer for one hour, either during lunch or in the evening after work, and connect with up to three students for 20 minutes to discuss various topics. Students are encouraged to use this time to review portfolios, get feedback on resumes, inquire about the alumni volunteer’s firm and experience, and seek career advice. This is not a job interview; rather, it’s an introduction and an opportunity to have an informal meeting with a professional and grow networks.
If you are interested in learning more or participating in our Alumni Office Hours, contact Kim Wong Haggart.
The UVA School of Architecture values partnering with alumni and organizations to foster community and networking opportunities for our alumni, parents, students, and friends. A-School alumni-hosted events come in a variety of shapes, sizes, themes, and formats. If you are interested in hosting, please contact Kim Wong Haggart to begin planning. Examples of events include:
- Host A-School Design Salons (Dinners by Design) in your city
Inspired by Designed Conversations, a series of dinner discussions initiated by students to spark dialogues around creative topics, alumni can host a small dinner or reception at their home or firm. Hosts are encouraged to invite attendees to bring topics for discussion or set a discussion topic in advance for participants to discuss.
- Host externship happy hours in January
In January, while students participate in externships in various cities nationwide, local firms and offices can host a reception to welcome students to the area. This is a great way to showcase your office, connect with new and upcoming talent, and provide networking opportunities for students.
- Host an A-School Alumni reception in your city
Our alumni and friends take pleasure in exploring new indoor and outdoor spaces while socializing together. If you have space in your office for 15 or 100 people, or access to a suitable venue for a program, our office is happy to collaborate on a reception or panel discussion for our alumni community.

McIntire School of Commerce
McIntire Alumni Mentoring Program (MAM)
The McIntire Alumni Mentoring Program (MAM) fosters meaningful connections between experienced professionals and aspiring leaders. Through mentorship, alumni share their insights, guidance, and real-world knowledge with current students, helping mentees navigate challenges, build confidence, and expand their networks. These one-to-one relationships are invaluable—not only do they provide mentees with practical advice and fresh perspectives, but they also give mentors a chance to give back, refine their leadership skills, and stay engaged with the Commerce community.
Second-year undergraduate students will be matched with their mentors in January and the program will continue through the duration of the spring semester. Mentors and mentees are encouraged to remain in touch beyond the second-year experience if mutually agreeable.
If you are interested in serving as a mentor, please complete this form by January 1.
For any additional questions, please email Kristin Thurman, Assistant Director of Engagement kkw6c@virginia.edu.
Virtual Industry Sessions
The McIntire School of Commerce's Virtual Industry Sessions offer students an opportunity to gain knowledge from accomplished alumni across a variety of fields. These engaging panels feature esteemed McIntire graduates who share their expertise, career insights, and real-world experiences, helping students explore potential industries and make informed professional decisions. With direct access to seasoned professionals, participants can deepen their understanding, ask meaningful questions, and expand their networks—all from the convenience of a virtual setting.
For any additional questions, please email Kristin Thurman, Assistant Director of Engagement kkw6c@virginia.edu.
Classroom Speakers
Returning to Grounds as a classroom speaker—whether in person or virtually—is a rewarding way for McIntire alumni to give back while sharing their expertise with the next generation of Commerce leaders. By engaging with students in a dynamic learning environment, alumni provide firsthand industry insights, career advice, and real-world perspectives that enrich classroom discussions.
For any additional questions, please email Kristin Thurman, Assistant Director of Engagement kkw6c@virginia.edu.
Alumni who volunteer to support McIntire events play a powerful role in building and sustaining a vibrant Commerce school community. Whether it's helping promote or staff a regional gathering, hosting a student trek, or opening their home for a networking reception, these volunteers create meaningful opportunities for connection. Hosting an event allows alumni to showcase their professional success, support fellow graduates, and help current students expand their networks.
If you are interested in volunteering to support a McIntire event, please email Greg Driscoll, Director of Strategic Engagement driscoll@virginia.edu.
