Cavs Care - Habitat For Humanity Greater Boston Build Project

With Massachusetts state COVID restrictions lifted, UVA Club of Boston is looking forward to restarting in-person service events! We’re starting it off with an exciting Cavs Care volunteering opportunity with Habitat for Humanity. Construction experience is NOT needed, just a can-do attitude!

All UVA alumni, friends, and families are invited to join in on this group volunteering opportunity at Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston. Habitat for Humanity has been building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter in the Greater Boston area since 1987. Hundreds of low-income people live in Habitat homes in local communities such as Belmont, Malden, Needham, Newton, and many Boston neighborhoods including Dorchester, Roslindale, Roxbury, and South Boston (https://habitatboston.org/about/mission-and-history/).

Habitat for Humanity has asked us to help fundraise for the build project, so in addition to a lump sum donation of $500 from the UVA Club of Boston, there will be a $25 registration fee for each registration slot.

The location for this event will be announced soon (either Malden, MA or the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, MA).

General Event Information:

  • COVID-19 Precautions: The Habitat for Humanity staff has been vaccinated again the COVID-19 virus, but are still taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe by sanitizing all tools before and after use, providing masks, hand sanitizer, and hand washing stations. Volunteers will be asked to wear a mask on the build site at all times except during lunch. Volunteers will also be required to complete a COVID-19 health screening questionnaire and have their temperature taken before the build day begins.
  • Volunteer Agreement & Waiver: Volunteers will be asked to sign a volunteer agreement and waiver of liability prior to the day of the event. This waiver will be emailed to volunteers once registration is confirmed.
  • Build Site: Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston has two ongoing build sites, one in Malden and one in Mission Hill (https://habitatboston.org/about/our-builds/). Once we get closer to the build date, we will be assigned a site. They are both accessible by public transportation and free street parking is available on site.
  • Proper Dress: Wear comfortable clothing and expect to get dirty with spilled paint, dirt, etc. Closed-toe shoes are a must and layers in the wintertime are key as our homes under construction are often not insulated or heated.
  • Food & Drink: Bring any food or drink you will need for the day including water. Convenience stores are within driving distance but can be a far walk from some sites.
