Join us on an unforgettable adventure discovering Spain's picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage. This carefully crafted itinerary takes us on a journey from the vibrant streets of Madrid to the medieval towns and historic landmarks scattered across the Spanish countryside. Experience the charm of tiny villages, marvel at architectural wonders, and indulge in the flavors of Spanish cuisine as we traverse the landscapes of Catalonia and beyond. We begin our adventure by exploring the iconic landmarks of Madrid, including the world-renowned Prado Museum and the historic Alcalá Gate, before venturing to the historic university towns of Alcalá de Henares and Sigüenza. We’ll tour the remarkable Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza, navigate the winding alleys at Lleida, and walk the walled towns of Cuenca and Chinchón. Each destination offers a unique glimpse into Spain's storied past. Our program will be highlighted with stays at historic and luxurious paradors throughout the trip. An optional pre-trip extension in Madrid allows for time to visit Segovia, a vibrant and modern city with a strong Roman past, famed for its spectacular Aqueduct and majestic Alcazar, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. In addition, an optional post- trip extension to Barcelona allows for time to explore more of this beautiful country.

David T. Gies is former Chair of his Department. He has published seventeen books, including The Cambridge Companion to Modern Spanish Culture (1999), Theatre and Politics in Nineteenth-Century Spain: Juan de Grimaldi as Impresario and Government Agent (Cambridge, 1988), The Theatre in Nineteenth-Century Spain (Cambridge, 1994), The Cambridge History of Spanish Literature (2004), The Cambridge History of Theatre in Spain (co-edited, 2012), Eros y amistad (2016), and The Eighteenth Centuries: Global Networks of Enlightenment (co-edited, 2017). Author of more than 115 scholarly and 147 book reviews, he edits DIECIOCHO, a journal dedicated to the study of the Spanish Enlightenment, now in its 46th year. He has received the University of Virginia Outstanding Teaching Award, the Thomas Jefferson Award, and, in 2007, was named Encomienda de Número de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, a knighthood granted by His Majesty Juan Carlos, King of Spain. In July 2013, he was elected for a three-year term as President of the International Association of Hispanists, the world’s largest professional organization of Spanish scholars, and in September 2015, he was elected Honorary President of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish National Honorary Society. In 2016, he won the prestigious Anderson Imbert Prize from the North American Academy of the Spanish Language and was named Corresponding Member of the Spanish Royal Academy in Madrid. He has been a longtime board member of the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, and in 2019 he joined the board of the Dukes of Soria Foundation.

Arrive in Madrid and transfer to the hotel. Familiarize yourself with the city on a panoramic tour of Madrid. Learn about the city’s history, monuments, and customs and see such landmarks as the Alcalá Gate, Retiro Park, Cibeles Square, Las Ventas Bullring, Neptuno Square, and Gran Vía Street among other sites. A local guide will lead us through the world-renowned Prado Museum. Our visit will focus on the Spanish masters including El Greco, Velazquez, and Goya. Discover the history of the original building and how it evolved into one of the most important art galleries in the world. This evening, gather for our welcome dinner.

DAY 3 – Monday, May 5, 2025
Madrid/Alcalá de Henares/Sigüenza
Following breakfast, we’ll drive to nearby Alcalá de Henares, a UNESCO-World Heritage site and birth city of the illustrious Miguel de Cervantes. Known as one of the oldest university towns in Europe, we will explore what remains of the original college buildings, as well as the cathedral and palace that date back to Spain’s “Golden Age.” Following lunch on your own, we will depart for the medieval town of Sigüenza, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Guadalajara province. Steeped in history, this picturesque town is home to an outstanding architectural heritage. We’ll spend time at the gothic Cathedral, with its famous sepulcro del doncel (tomb of the youth), chapels and cemetery, and stroll through the Plaza Mayor, a charming square surrounded by historic buildings and featuring a 16th century fountain. The town is dominated by the enchanting castle that overlooks the town and countryside, first built by the Romans, but rebuilt at various later periods. Today, it has been converted to a luxury parador, and will be our accommodation for the night. Dinner is at the parador this evening.

Sigüenza/Zaragoza
Depart for Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragón. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Ebro River, Zaragoza offers a stunning blend of architectural wonders and vibrant local life. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before embarking on a walking tour of the city. Begin in Plaza del Pilar located in the heart of the city’s historic center, where the forum of the ancient Roman city Caesar Augusta once stood. We’ll visit the iconic Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar and stroll through the winding streets exploring the Mudéjar-style landmarks combining Islamic and Gothic architecture. Dinner is on your own this evening.

Zaragoza
Today we immerse ourselves in the historical wonders of Zaragoza, beginning with a visit to the remarkable Aljafería Palace. Dating back to the 11th century, this Moorish masterpiece, originally built by Al-Muqtadir, showcases the pinnacle of Taifa kingdom splendor. As the sole surviving example of Hispanic Islamic architecture from this period, its significance is unparalleled. After lunch at your leisure, delve into Zaragoza's artistic legacy, from the masterpieces of Goya to modern street art. We will explore the Goya Museum and, time permitting, the Pablo Gargallo Museum, celebrating the city's artistic luminaries. Tonight, indulge in the flavors of Zaragoza with dinner at a local restaurant.

Lleida
Discover the historic and cultural treasures of Lleida, located in picturesque Catalonia. Formally a strategic stronghold for the Romans, Lleida boasts impressive monuments like the Seu Vella, a Gothic cathedral overlooking the city. We’ll enjoy a walking tour to explore highlights including the Seu Vella and the Castle of the King-Suda, offering panoramic vistas of Lleida and the scenic Segre River valley. Dinner this evening will be at our Parador.

Lleida/Albarracín/Cuenca
Today we depart to Cuenca with a stop in Albarracín along the way. Marvel at the historic architecture of Albarracín, where the Casa de la Julianeta, Rincón del Abanico, and Casa Azagra captivate visitors with their unique charm. The only way to explore this tiny village is to walk, and we will take our time strolling through the narrow streets, admiring both quaint homes as well as grand noble houses adorned with elaborate coats of arms, showcasing the prosperity of the eighteenth century. Following lunch on your own, we'll resume our journey to the enchanting city of Cuenca. Check into the parador and enjoy dinner together this evening.

DAY 8– Saturday, May 10, 2025
Cuenca
Cuenca's medieval historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rich history and architectural marvels. Delve into the city's past as our local guide unveils its fascinating stories, from its people to its iconic buildings and breathtaking landscapes. Explore the interior of the Skyscrapers of San Martín, Europe's tallest houses from the 16th century, boasting an impressive 12 stories. Wander through the former Jewish quarter, admire the Mangana Tower, and discover the historic San Julián Seminary. Later, we will admire the Hanging Houses, Cuenca’s famous homes that literally hang off the side of a cliff, dating as far back as the 15th century. We’ll visit one of the homes that also houses an Abstract Art Museum, with paintings and sculptures by such artists as Torner, Millares, Rueda and Sempere. After free time for lunch, continue on an afternoon excursion to the Enchanted City, just 20 minutes from Cuenca. This natural wonder, declared a Site of National Interest in 1929, enchants visitors with its curious rocky formations, sculpted over the centuries by ice, wind and water. Conclude our day with a delightful dinner at the Parador.

Aranjuez/Chinchón
Following breakfast, we journey to Aranjuez to visit the Royal Palace where history and beauty converge in this historic royal site. As part of the Aranjuez Cultural Landscape, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area boasts 274 acres of breathtaking gardens set amidst the convergence of the Tajo and Jarama rivers. The extraordinary Royal Palace of Aranjuez has long served as the favored country residence of Spanish monarchs, with a legacy dating back to Philip II's. Over the centuries, subsequent Bourbon monarchs enhanced the site's splendor, adding new gardens, tree-lined streets, and settlements. We drive 30 minutes and arrive at Chinchón, a charming town seemingly stuck in time. The village has retained its unique personality and allure, highlighted by its hilltop houses, winding alleyways, and distinctive painted balconies in the town’s historic Plaza Mayor. Dinner this evening is at our Parador.

Spend 2 nights in Madrid (nights of May 2 and May 3) ahead of the start of the Main program to visit Segovia and Ávila in Castilla to what is known as the “Heart of Spain”. The pre-trip extension includes 2 nights at a 4-star hotel in Madrid, arrival transfer from Madrid airport to hotel. Afternoon and evening at leisure on the day of arrival in Madrid. Next day full day tour to Segovia including entrance fee to the Alcazar and Cathedral and visit to Ávila. Return to Madrid for overnight and join the main program on May 4.

Visit Barcelona, one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities of Spain known as the capital of Catalan Art Nouveau. Barcelona is home to masterpieces by Catalonia’s most famous architect, Antonio Gaudí, one of the greatest innovators of his time and creator of many of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Extension includes panoramic walking tour, including the Picasso Museum, the elegant Paseo de Gracia and visits to Gaudi’s Casa Batló, La Pedrera, Park GÜell, and the spectacular Sagrada Familia basilica. Visit the city’s Gothic Quarter and explore the Central Market, also known as La Boquería. In addition, enjoy a free day in Barcelona to explore this colorful cosmopolitan city on your own.
Extension includes 3 nights at the 4-star Gallery Hotel located in the heart of Barcelona, next to Paseo de Gracia; breakfast every day, arrival, and departure transfers, walking tour of Barcelona; full day tour of Barcelona by private vehicle; entrance fees; guidance by English-speaking local guide; one lunch and farewell dinner at a local restaurant by the seaside. A deposit of $800 per person is required to reserve your spot. Final invoicing will be done approximately 110 days prior to departure. Final payment is due 95 days prior to departure (January 28, 2025).
Your reservation is not confirmed until your deposit is paid and processed. Royal Adventures reserves the right to cancel any reservations that are not paid in full at any time after final payment is due. If you make your reservation after the final payment date, payment in full will be required upon reservation.

RESERVATIONS, DEPOSITS, & FINAL PAYMENT: To reserve a space on this program, a $800 deposit is required per person. Initial deposits may be charged to a credit card; however, a 3% credit card processing fee will be added. Final payment (by check only) is due January 28, 2025.
TOUR SIZE: This tour is exclusively designed for University of Virginia members and friends on a first-come, first-served basis. The minimum group size is 15. Should the minimum not be met, we reserve the right to levy a small group surcharge.
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS: Cancellations received on or before January 28, 2025 are eligible for a refund less a $500 per person cancellation penalty. Cancellations received after January 28 are subject to 100% penalty of all deposits and payments. Cancellations must be received in writing. There are no refunds for unused meals, accommodations, or other trip features.
TRAVEL INSURANCE: We strongly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance as the cancellation penalty in this brochure will apply.
