Day 4, Friday, April 11
Kinderdijk/Willemstad/Bruinisse

Kinderdijk WindmillsFor more than 700 years, the canals, windmills and pumping stations at Kinderdijk have drained the land for agriculture and protected it from flooding. Today this network of 19 authentic windmills built between 1722 and 1761 to keep water out of the polder is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the largest assembly of windmills in the Netherlands, and these finely preserved structures are now considered national monuments.

Visit one of the windmills and learn more about the importance of water handling in this region. Construction of hydraulic works for land drainage began in the Middle Ages and continues to this day.

This afternoon, you will have the option to either visit the Delta Works, an impressive feat of hydraulic engineering hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World; or explore Veere, once known for its rich history as the center of the Scottish wool trade.

Day 3, Tuesday, April 8
Amsterdam
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning, followed by a walking tour of historic Amsterdam.

The first mention of the city known today as Amsterdam was in 1275. A bold vision to reinvent Amsterdam as a new port city was realized near the end of the 16th century and early 17th century, when an elaborate network of canals was created to connect the medieval port with the historic old town. Today, these canals—which have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—divide the city into more than 90 islands, and are lined with gabled houses and noble brick facades.

Stroll through one of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods, noted for its narrow streets and small canals.  Visit the exquisite 17th-century Our Lord in the Attic Museum and explore the exceptional attention to detail in its uniquely preserved, fully furnished rooms—a quintessential example of what homes during the Dutch Golden Age looked like.

Enjoy lunch on your own. Spend the afternoon at leisure and make your own plans for dinner. The Gohagan Travel Hospitality Desk stands ready to help with restaurant and itinerary suggestions.

You may choose to visit the legendary Gerard de Graaff tobacconist, which opened in 1928 and became known for its house-brand G. de Graaff cigars—bringing in such famous customers as Sir Winston Churchill. You will also see the magnificent Noordeinde Palace and Palace Garden (with the royal stables just behind), as well as the Grote Kerk and old city hall.
