Lauren has been on the faculty of the Department of Environmental Sciences since 2018 with expertise in polar and cold regions of our planet. She teaches courses in polar environments, glaciology, and geoscience. Her research focuses on understanding the controls on glacier and ice sheet change using sediment and landform records from Antarctica and elsewhere globally. She has been on two research cruises to Antarctica, both of which were three months long. She has published over thirty articles in peer-reviewed journals, including within Nature and Science family journals, and has given many talks at universities and national and international conferences.
She has been awarded as Mead Honored Faculty (2020) for outstanding educational engagement with undergraduate students at UVA. She has also been nominated to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Polar Research Board (2022) and has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Geophysical Union Cryospheric Sciences Section (2022). She is a principal investigator within the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration to better understand all facets of this glacier that is one of the leading Antarctic contributors to global sea-level rise today.
Depart on an overnight flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina’s cosmopolitan capital. Settle into the Alvear Art Hotel (or similar) before seeing the city’s Beaux-Arts palaces and parks, and Recoleta—the final resting place of Argentina’s iconic first lady, Eva Perón. In the early evening, we gather for an informal reception and a drink at the hotel.

With long hours of daylight at this time of year, you have ample opportunity to explore the Antarctic Peninsula and the surrounding islands. In keeping with the nature of an expedition, the schedule is flexible so that we can take advantage of the unexpected— watching whales perform off the bow, taking an after-dinner Zodiac cruise, or heading out on an unplanned landing. We anticipate making landings to walk ashore and kayak among the ice floes and experience close encounters with wildlife. You may have the thrill of watching the powerful ship head into the pack ice or step ashore to thousands of Adélie and chinstrap penguins. You’ll learn how climate change affects the penguin populations and how to capture images of those same penguins from an accomplished professional photographer. Back aboard, the undersea specialist may present video from that day’s dive or show rare images taken up to 1,000 feet below the surface using the ROV. The expert staff will craft an expedition where you will learn, see, and experience more.

National Geographic Explorer is a state-of-the-art expedition ship designed for in-depth exploration. A fully stabilized, ice-class vessel, with an ice-reinforced hull, enables her to navigate polar passages while providing comfort, elegance and a deep connection to the environment. Her dynamic suite of exploration features—including an interactive chart room, a high observation lounge, and a low-profile bow with dramatic views—reflect a dedication to curiosity and wonder. She carries both kayaks and a fleet of Zodiacs. An undersea specialist operates a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and sophisticated video equipment, extending access to the underwater world.
Public Areas: Bistro bar; Chart Room; restaurant; Global Gallery; library, lounge with full-service bar and state-of-the-art facilities for films, slideshows and presentations; mud room with lockers for expedition gear; observation lounge; a glass enclosed fitness center; outdoor stretching area; two LEXspa treatment rooms and sauna. Our “Open Bridge” provides guests an opportunity to meet our Officers and Captain and learn about navigation.
Meals: Served in single seating with unassigned tables for an informal atmosphere and easy mingling. Menu is international with local flair. Meals are served in the Bistro Bar and restaurant.
Cabins and Suites: All cabins face outside with windows or portholes, private facilities and climate controls. Some cabins have balconies. Cabins are equipped with Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections and USB ports for mobile devices.
Expedition Equipment: Zodiac landing craft, kayaks, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), hydrophone, splash-cam, underwater video camera, aerial remote controlled camera, video microscope, and OM System Photo Gear Locker.

By registering for a trip, the guest agrees to all such terms and conditions.
