Event Details

All alumni, family, and friends are invited to join DC Hoos for a night with the Washington Concert Opera as they close the season with Idomeneo, Mozart’s first mature operatic masterpiece. We will gather as a group for a pre-performance Social at Sixty Vines Foggy Bottom from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and then walk over for the 6 p.m. performance. We are excited to offer discounted group tickets for this performance!

Premiered in Munich in 1781 when the composer was just 25 years old, this opera seria draws on Greek myth to explore human struggle against gods and fate. Set on the island of Crete in the aftermath of the Trojan War, Idomeneo reflects Mozart’s deep understanding of drama and musical form, blending the emotional intensity of Italian opera with the grandeur of French Baroque spectacle.

About the Opera:

In Idomeneo, the title character—King of Crete—returns home from war, only to find himself bound by a fateful vow to sacrifice the first person he sees: his own son. Caught between divine will and human emotion, Mozart’s characters struggle with loyalty, love, and duty in this thrilling and deeply human drama. Filled with glorious arias, sweeping choruses, and powerful orchestral writing, Idomeneo stands as a milestone in Mozart’s operatic legacy and a stirring finale to WCO’s 2025–2026 season.
