UVA Club of Savannah and Georgia Historical Society: An Afternoon with Professor Grace Hale

All alumni, parents, and friends are invited to join the UVA Club of Savannah and Georgia Historical Society for a conversation with Professor Grace Hale, the Commonwealth Professor of American Studies and History, and author of A Nation of Outsiders: How the White Middle Class Fell in Love with Rebellion in PostWar America (Oxford Univ Press, 2011). She will speak on “The Cold War and Popular Culture”. The Cold War’s impact was felt across all of American culture, from cinema and film (where the villains were often Communists) to television, to America’s consumer culture, to the race to beat the Soviets in space. This conversation will examine how the Cold War shaped American culture for over 40 years, the enormous impact it had on American society, and how it all changed when the Cold War ended.

The discussion will be led by Dr. Stan Deaton, the Dr. Elaine B. Andrews Distinguished Historian at the Georgia Historical Society.

Join us online this fall for, “Tear Down This Wall”: The Cold War at 75, a series of virtual conversations with University of Virginia faculty. These conversations with some of the nation’s foremost scholars of the Cold War era will focus on presidential leadership, American diplomacy, the Civil Rights Movement, the role of media during the second half of the twentieth century, and the ongoing impact of that period on our world today.

Presentation co-sponsored by the UVA Club of Savannah and Georgia Historical Society. Founded in 1839 with the mission to collect, examine, and teach Georgia and American history, the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the premier independent statewide institution responsible for collecting, examining, and teaching Georgia history.
