UVA Club of Richmond: Virginia's Research Triangle Group Discussion
All alumni, friends, and families are invited to join the UVA Club of Richmond on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the BioTech 8 Building (4th-floor multi-purpose room) for a glimpse into Virginia’s initiative to establish our own Research Triangle. With funding approved by the General Assembly last year, this initiative aims to leverage resources and expertise among Virginia Universities to make Virginia a leader in biomedical research and pharmaceutical production.
Initially envisioned as a cooperative initiative among Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia, the triangle was expanded into more of a rhombus following the addition of Old Dominion University to the research network during the 2024 General Assembly session. Through this initiative, Virginia will have the platform to take new innovative drugs developed at one of the universities, scale it up, and do clinical trials.
For this event, we will have a distinguished panel that will give a brief overview of different aspects of the Research Triangle collaboration followed by the opportunity for Q/A. Another exciting opportunity will be offered to attendees to tour the laboratory at the Medicines for All Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University. This lab in Richmond is making lifesaving global health drugs more affordable and more available for people around the globe and plays an important role in Virginia’s Research Triangle.
See this reference article for a more in-depth look into these research efforts!
Our panelists for this small group discussion include:
- Moderator: Brian Campbell, Senior Advisor for External Affairs at Medicines for All Institute. Brian is also a 2003 UVA alum.
- Speaker: Jennifer W. Siciliano, Chief External Affairs Officer, UVA Health
- Speaker: B. Frank Gupton, PhD, Floyd D. Gottwald Chair of Pharmaceutical Engineering; Department Chair, Chemical and Life Science Engineering, VCU
