NORTH POLE- 90° NORTH
The North Pole: So far, only a very few people have ever reached it.
90° north with UVA Arctic Researcher and Professor of Environmental Sciences (and former Department Chair) Howie Epstein in July 2025, we'll charter the world's luxury icebreaker exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot by Ponant, and offer the unique opportunity to embark on the ultimate adventure to the icy realm of the North Pole where every moment is a testament to opulence and exploration. The first confirmed expedition to reach the geographic North Pole was led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team in 1926. Imagine the thrill of sailing through pristine Arctic waters surrounded by vast expanses of glittering ice and majestic polar landscapes. As you step aboard our state-of-the-art vessel, you'll be greeted by unparalleled comfort and elegance, with plush accommodations, gourmet dining, and world-class amenities awaiting your indulgence. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the enchanting beauty of the Arctic as you traverse its frozen wonders in style and sophistication, creating memories to last a lifetime amidst the ethereal splendor of the North Pole.

These sessions, open for passengers to observe, will cover topics such as the vessel, the Arctic, wildlife, oceans, and ice in the region we are visiting. Also accompanying us is Professor *Alex Filippenko*, a Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley. He is an elected member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and is one of the world’s most highly cited astrophysicists. Prepare to explore fascinating stories about our planet and delve deeper into the mysteries of other planets and stars.
Howard Epstein is a professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, specializing in the ecology of arctic tundra, dry grasslands and shrublands, and mid-Atlantic temperate forests. His research focus is on vegetation dynamics, nutrient cycling, and plant-soil-atmosphere interactions. Dr. Epstein received his BA degree in computer science from Cornell University in 1986. He received an MS degree in Rangeland Ecosystem Science from Colorado State University in 1995 and a PhD in ecology, also from Colorado State, in 1997. He conducted postdoctoral studies at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado. Dr. Epstein came to the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1998. As part of his arctic research, he has traveled north of the Arctic Circle in most summers since 1999, including field sites in Alaska, Canada, and Siberian Russia. He teaches courses in the Fundamentals of Ecology, Terrestrial Ecology, and Ecology of Grasslands and Tundra. He has published over 175 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Howie has been faculty on multiple Cavalier Travels trips including Alaska and Iceland.

DAY 1.5 – Monday, July 7, 2025
Paris to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen
We’ll fly from Paris to Longyearbyen in the morning.
Upon arrival, enjoy a short excursion in Longyearbyen.
Longyearbyen is the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located on Svalbard’s main island, and is the northernmost territorial capital on the planet. With winter temperatures dropping to below 40°C, the landscapes of this mining town are simply breathtaking. The glaciers, the mountains stretching as far as the eye can see and the untouched nature, make you feel like you’re in completely unexplored territory.
Only three islands in the archipelago are inhabited: Bear Island (Bjørnøya), Hopen, and the largest, Spitsbergen, where the capital, Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town, is located, according to its tourism board.
"Svalbard is as close as most mortals aspire to get to the North Pole without missing out on their spirit," said Lonely Planet, which lies just under 500 miles from Norway's coast.
The islands were discovered by Willem Barents in 1596, a Dutch navigator and pioneer in Arctic expeditions. He came across the islands during his third exploration to discover a polar route to the East. Spitsbergen was named after its mountains - meaning “sharp mountains” in Dutch. Like several other crew members, Willem died under freezing circumstances from scurvy - a disease affecting sailors on long voyages due to lack of vitamin C from fresh fruits and vegetables. That Arctic sea bears his name in his honor.

DAY 2 – Tuesday, July 8, 2025
At Sea Along Spitsbergen
The largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, its name meaning “pointed mountains” in German, Spitsbergen is the last piece of land before the Arctic ice floe. Aboard your ship, you will sail along the extremely spectacular coastline of this icy land. Between millennial glaciers and rugged mountains, you will discover a jagged coastline, hollowed-out by fjords. A unique setting, the refuge of a particularly rich avifauna, offering you the possibility of taking fabulous photographs from the deck of your ship.

Navigating Through the Sea Ice
Enjoy the absolutely unique experience of sailing to the heart of the ice floe, this vast expanse of virgin, immaculate ice. The landscapes are constantly changing, shifting from a smooth, flat wilderness to a chaos of ice, then to channels of open water. Your ship will sail along these naturally open channels and through the areas where the frozen layer is thinnest, offering you the chance to experience magic maritime moments in the midst of drifting sea ice. It will also often be an opportunity to see a particular kind of fauna, totally dependent on the ice floe.

DAY 8 – Monday, July 14, 2025
Geographic North Pole!
Defined by a 90° North latitude, the Geographic North Pole lies on the Earth’s rotational axis, at the intersection of all meridians. Plunged into darkness for six months of the year, then lit by the sun for the following six months, this mythical site, permanently covered in ice and remote from any land, has fascinated generations of explorers. So far, only a very few people have ever reached it: an exploit which is now accessible to you aboard Le Commandant Charcot.
Today we get to watch the runners run one of the most exotic marathons in the world!

Furthermore I understand that participating in physical activities in the North Pole area may put me at some risk of death, falling or being blown into the frigid waters and other perils. I also agree that the specific activity of running or walking in the North Pole vicinity may, in an extreme worst case scenario, place me at risk of death from the frigid conditions as well as being lost in the Arctic due to poor weather or loss of communication as well as accident or illness, fully understanding that I am in a remote region devoid of many medical supplies and facilities.
In consideration of being permitted to participate in this trip, I fully assume responsibility upon myself for such bodily, mental, and financial injuries and delays caused by, but not limited to various surface transportation, accidents, aircraft malfunctions, hazards of traveling in the Arctic environment, forces of nature, civil unrest, terrorism, and other perils. I freely assume these and all other risks inherent in this North Pole Expedition, in exchange for the thrill and adventure of traveling to the Arctic Region.
