Overview

We are now a data-driven society. Artificial Intelligence (AI) advances as a Promethean moment or otherwise are driven by data as part of this paradigm. How is the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia responding to this moment regarding those we educate, the research we undertake, and the community we serve? In this talk, you will also learn about UVA’s state-of-the-art new School of Data Science building revealed in spring 2024. Join Philip Bourne, Dean of the School of Data Science, for this engaging conversation.

Immediately following the lecture, registrants will have the opportunity to attend an optional guided tour of the School of Data Science building.

Philip E. Bourne, PhD, FACMI, is the Stephenson Founding Dean of the School of Data Science and Professor of Data Science and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. Prior to this appointment, he was the Associate Director for Data Science (ADDS, also known as Chief Data Scientist) for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a Senior Investigator at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). As ADDS, he led the Trans-NIH US $110M per year Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) research initiative and contributed to data policies and infrastructure to accelerate biomedical discovery. Examples include establishing the NIH Commons, supporting data and software citation, and establishing preprints as a supported form of research. Before joining NIH, Professor Bourne was Associate Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Industry Alliances in the Office of Research Affairs and a Professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). He is a Past President of the International Society for Computational Biology, an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He has published over 350 papers and five books, garnering over 86,000 citations, and co-founded four companies. Awards include the Jim Gray eScience Award and the Benjamin Franklin Award.

His current research focuses on data science methods (including AI) applied to systems pharmacology, structural bioinformatics, and scholarly communication. As Dean of the School of Data Science, Bourne is leading an effort to create a new kind of school—a school without walls—guided by common goals: to further discovery, share knowledge, and make a positive impact on society through collaborative, open, and responsible data science research and education. Founded in 2019 through a $120 million gift, the largest in UVA history, the School is positioned to play an integral leadership role in the global digital future. Focusing on interdisciplinary, collaborative research and education. The School joins other departments across UVA, the community, industry, government, and non-profit organizations to use data science to further discovery and positively impact society.
