Emily Buerk started the Girls Who Code chapter at UVA and founded a nonprofit dedicated to linking people in poverty to local resources.
Buerk, who studied computer science and systems engineering, was the recipient of one of UVA’s most competitive merit-based undergraduate scholarships and an honors program scholarship recognizing the top 5% of each engineering class. “I love how collaborative UVA Engineering is, how supportive our community of engineers is, and how the school is preparing us for the real world,” she said. “I want to lead an engineering division at a company someday.”
