UVA Club of Charlottesville

The UVA Club of Charlottesville is a community club, regardless of your affiliation with the University of Virginia. We host a series of educational, networking, athletic, charitable and social events where you will meet many people in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle area who have an appreciation for UVA and its critically important role in the community in which it thrives.

Scholarship Fund

Our scholarship is currently funded by donations and the proceeds from two dedicated fundraisers each year. Our leadership and participants remain committed to growing our annual scholarship through programming and the generous support of alumni, parents, and friends of UVA. Will you help us in this endeavor?

Thank you for your support of our local students!

Mr. Jefferson believed education was the most effective way to establish an organized, informed, and capable society. Moreover, he felt that institutions of learning should be financially supported by the general public; scholarship could be obtained by people from varied social and economic backgrounds.

In this same vein, the UVA Club of Charlottesville established a scholarship in 2019 to provide financial assistance to an incoming student from the greater Charlottesville area. Our annual recipient comprises the Jeffersonian qualities of citizenship, leadership, and integrity, and demonstrates a financial need.

The annual scholarship of $500 will be awarded to one student. To inquire about the application, please call the UVA Fund at (434) 243-9000.

August and September Activity Recap

The Club took a bit of a breather over the summer consistent with the slower pace that seems to fill Charlottesville with the noticeable absence of the students. We started recharging our batteries with August’s Summer Social at Penn Park that offered trivia (UVA, of course) and Splendora’s gelato as the perfect send-off to summer. Thank you to Debbie McPhillips (Col '79, Darden '84, PAR '15, '22) and Molly Switzer (Col '89) for organizing the fun.

Book Club with Bruce Holsinger

August’s Hoos Reading Hoos Book Club event welcomed Bruce Holsinger (PAR '25), author of Culpability (an Oprah’s Book Club selection) and UVA English professor. September’s book club brought yet another author to the group with Corban Addison (Law '04) talking about Wastelands: The True Story of Farm Country on Trial. Molly Switzer (Col '89), our book club leader, makes the magic happen here.

The Club’s annual Pickleball Scholarship Fundraiser was a sold-out event for the second year in a row and welcomed picklers of all skill levels. Toward the end of the night, representatives from UVA’s national championship pickleball team put on quite the show in an exhibition match and were then gracious enough to play-in with attendees, offering tips and tricks to strengthen our games. Thank you to Kim (McIntire '88) and Brian Glass for leading the night that allowed us to contribute $1100 to our scholarship fund!

Learning at UVA's Ovservatory

As we hit the stride of September, we packed the McCormick Observatory for a night of stargazing through the telescope that has been in operation since 1895! The group viewed the night’s sky through different lenses and learned about the science of astronomy. We even got a close-up look at Saturn. Rob Nelms (Col '80) once again made arrangements for the Club’s top of the mountain visit.

As we hit the mid-point of the month, about 50 Cavalier fans spent a lovely afternoon at the Polo Match at King Family Vineyard. Southern fare was the perfect accompaniment to the vineyard’s offerings and the sporting “chuckers.” The weather, views – and most especially conversations did not disappoint. This is likely to be a new annual offering.
