Managing Your Email Forwarding
Beginning July 1, you can easily manage your alumni email forwarding preferences, such as adding new destinations, forwarding to multiple accounts, pausing delivery, or removing old addresses, using the our self-service portal.
Access the portal here*: portal.alumni.virginia.edu
*Note: You cannot manage your email until we officially switch over on July 1. Nothing will happen if you attempt to login before that date.
1. Accessing Your Account
The portal uses a secure, passwordless login system:
- Navigate to portal.alumni.virginia.edu.
- Enter your alumni email address and click Submit.
- Check the inbox of your current destination email address (where your mail is currently being forwarded).
- Open the message in your email and click the secure verification link to instantly access your personal dashboard.
2. Adding a New Forwarding Address
To change where your mail is sent, or to add an additional destination, you simply add the new address to your profile:
- Scroll to the bottom of your dashboard to the section labeled: To forward your mail to another address, enter it here:.
- Type your new destination email address into the text box.
- Click the blue Add button.
- The new address will appear in the middle section of your dashboard with a blue Pending status badge. (Note: Pending forwards will not receive mail until verified.)
- Check the inbox of that new email address for a verification email. Once verified, it will move to the top section with a green Active badge, and mail will begin forwarding there.
3. Forwarding to Multiple Addresses
If you want your alumni emails delivered to more than one inbox simultaneously (e.g., both work and personal), simply repeat the "Add" process above for each email address. All addresses listed at the top with a green Active badge will receive your mail.
4. Pausing Forwarding
If you need to temporarily stop emails from forwarding to a specific address without deleting it entirely:
- Locate the active email address under the Your mail is currently being forwarded to the following address(es): section.
- Click the grey Pause button next to the address.
- The address will move to the lower section, and its status will change to a red Inactive badge. This means mail receiving is turned off for that specific address.
5. Removing / Deleting an Address
When you completely switch to a new email address, you should remove the old one to keep your account clean:
- Locate the address you wish to remove (it can be in the active, pending, or inactive list).
- Click the red Delete button next to that address to permanently remove it from your forwarding profile.
