Global Value Chains and the Future of Work (in person or virtual)
Overview
Will robots displace workers? Does automation mean the end of work as we know it? While much of the discussion about the future of work centers on technological innovations, changes in the way work is organized may ultimately prove more consequential for the well-being of workers, particularly in developing countries. This talk explores the causes and consequences of changes in the world of work through a focus on global supply chains.
Speaker Biography
Jennifer Bair, Associate Dean for the Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology, College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
Jennifer Bair is Associate Dean for the Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University and her BA in International Studies from Johns Hopkins University. She is an editor of the journal Review of International Political Economy, the co-editor of four books, and the author of many articles. Professor Bair has conducted extensive research on global value chains and development, primarily in Latin America but more recently also in South Asia. She has spoken about her research on these issues at the United Nations, the European Parliament, and the International Labor Office.
